GEO, defined
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the discipline of optimizing your website and digital footprint so that generative AI systems — the "answer engines" people now ask instead of searching — can retrieve your information and present you as a recommended option in their responses.
Where classic search returns a page of links for the user to evaluate, a generative engine synthesizes one answer and, increasingly, names specific products, services and businesses. GEO is the work of being one of those named entities: making your content machine-retrievable, factually clear, and trustworthy enough to cite.
Why GEO emerged
Three shifts happened at once. First, hundreds of millions of people started using AI assistants weekly, many of them for recommendations they'd previously have Googled. Second, Google itself began answering queries directly with AI Overviews, pushing traditional links below the fold. Third, answer engines began citing sources — which means there is now a visible, winnable "position zero" inside the AI answer.

The GEO ranking factors
Across the major engines, the factors that decide whether you get cited cluster into four areas — the same four our scanner scores:
1. Crawler access
AI engines use named crawlers (GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended, CCBot). If your robots.txt blocks them, you're invisible to that engine — full stop.
